Wildheart Animal Sanctuary
The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary is a refuge for rescued animals (most notably, big cats) inside the former Sandown Fort on the coastline of Sandown, Isle of Wight. Inside the main sanctuary building is a shop and spacious cafe. The grounds consist of numerous wooden and brick animal enclosures and storage buildings, as well as several large bamboo animal enclosures. There is a concrete and stone tunnel viewing area for some of the tigers. Tropical planting and wide, flat public walkways give the impression the sanctuary could be located anywhere.
A generously sized picnic area is located on one of the greens and the children’s playground has a retro-style giant plastic tiger slide.
The interior of parts of the fort are accessible, providing several bunker rooms and tunnels. In one of the rooms, an original PLUTO (Pipeline Under The Ocean, built during World War II to supply fuel to the allies in France) pumping station can be viewed.
The fort is one of the Palmerston Forts and the beach and surrounding car park is visible from its roof.
