the needles new battery & rocket testing site

The Needles New Battery is a site further up the headland from The Old Battery. It was completed between 1893-95, the New Battery was built after the Old Battery site deteriorated from coastal erosion. The New Battery was used during both World Wars. In 1955 the site became shrouded in secrecy as it became a rocket testing site. There is a recreated room which reveals the little know ‘race for space’ during Britains cold war. Some of the buildings here are Brutalist and could double as many post WW11 1950’s buildings in Europe. Views look out to the Solent and The Needles in one direction and in the other direction straight across the Solent with no distinctive landmarks.
